You’re not off the hook when you greet the new year on January 1, 2017. Celebrating the cycles of the most widely used civil calendar, the Gregorian calendar named after Pope Gregory XIII who introduced it in October 1582, this solar (sun) calendar is based on the revolution of the Earth around the sun. It reflects a 0.002% correction in the length of the year from the earlier Julian calendar.
In California, there are many new year festivals based on lunisolar calendars that bring the lunar (moon phase) calendar year into synchronization with the solar year. The most prominent of these events are Chinese and Tet New Year festivals in January or February. If you attend one you should know that 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. Lucky numbers for “roosters” are: 5, 7, and 8. Unlucky numbers: 1, 3, and 9.
