SAN DIEGO, CALIF. — The annual shamRock Festival on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2016 exemplifies what Gaslmap Quarter does best — throw huge block parties — Mardi Gras, shamRock and Monster Bash — that include drinking, dancing to live music and wearing costumes. Of course, Gaslamp hasn’t always been so tame. Its Redlight District developed during the 1880s when the city’s booming prosperity attracted unscrupulous characters, including prostitutes, gamblers, and outlaws such as Wyatt Earp, who ran three gambling halls. The abandoned area to the south became a redlight district known as the Stingaree, a name derived from the fierce stingray in San Diego Bay. It is said you could be stung as badly in the Stingaree as you could in San Diego Bay.
