Approx. 1 in 10 California cities have won the All-America City award, recognized by a road sign or plaque designed with red and white stripes and white stars on a blue background, similar to the American flag. Interestingly, some of the top tourist destinations in California don’t apply for the award, citing reasons such as it doesn’t align with their branding efforts. For the cities that do apply and win, they can proudly place patriotic signs all over town! San Pablo was the only California city to be selected in 2014, and though it’s their 2nd time winning,  the emphasis in this year’s selection process on healthy lifestyle opportunities for residents was near and dear to the San Pablo’s heart. The bay area city faces many challenges–over 50% of the population, which is Hispanic, are renters, with around 20% living below poverty levels. All-America City Award judges take into consideration a city’s special challenges, needs, and the ways the leaders have dealt with their circumstances. Congratulations to San Pablo!
