Photos: The 82nd Annual Great Sand Sculpture Contest at Granada Beach in Long Beach attracted over 10,000 visitors and raised thousands of dollars for the Long Beach Library Foundation on Aug.16 & 17, 2014. Among the entertainment was an amateur sand sculpting contest and demos & displays by master sculptors. Summer Beach Party sculpture with palm trees, tiki gods and a big sand pelican summed up the fun weekend.

Believe it or not, California is only half-way through the sand castle contest season, even though the kids are heading back to school soon and won’t normally be making beach trips part of their daily routine! To keep the energy flowing, look forward to autumn’s traditionally warm, sunny days and more sandcastle festivals on the way.  Among them are several favorites in San Francisco, San Diego, Pacifica, Corona del mar, Carmel and Point Reyes.
