What Davis is to Davis Picnic Day, Santa Barbara is to Earth Day Festival on April 16 & 17, 2016. Sometimes a festival comes to town just because. But then there are festivals filled with meaning, and in Santa Barbara (which hosts many festivals throughout the year) the annual Earth Day celebration is one the most important. The event was born out of an environmental disaster on its shores — a 1969 oil spill that outraged Senator Gaylord Nelson so much he passed a bill designating April 22 as a national day to celebrate the earth. Santa Barbara is a leading proponent for Earth causes:

  • Santa Barbara Car Free  (santabarbaracarfree.org) invites tourists to ditch their cars.
  • Art from Scrap is an art center with ReUse Store.
  • TOMS, founded in Santa Barbara, uses recycled materials to manufacture shoes and helps one person for every item sold. Get ready for bare feet in Santa Barbara on May 10, 2016 during One Day Without Shoes.
