Fans of vintage and silent films in California cherish the few remaining theaters featuring these movies and shorts regularly. El Segundo’s Old Town Music Hall and Niles Silent Film Museum in Fremont are several places you may want to look, in addition to the beloved annual Catalina Silent Film Festival at the Avalon Casino Theater. Most summers there are outdoor silent movies accompanied by the Spreckels Organ in San Diego’s Balboa Park.

Bay Theatre in Seal Beach, a more than 70-year-old landmark, used to feature silent films and classic movies. At one time it even had a Wurlitzer Organ. Sadly, it has fallen into disrepair and has been closed since 2012. Its future remained a question mark until Paul Dunlap purchased it, planning to bring it back to its glory.

Having renovated Fullerton’s 1922 Spanish Colonial-style California Hotel into the popular mixed-use Villa Del Sol and restored buildings in Orange and other cities as part of Dunlap Property Group, his successes give locals hope. Seal Beach is known for its small town charm and this Main Street icon fits in perfectly with the look and feel of the quaint four block shopping and entertainment district some compare to Carmel.
