William Shakespeare (1564-1616) never actually came to the State of California — it didn’t exist when he wrote his famous plays. Nor did he return to the Golden State. But his spirit lives on each and every summer as Californians enjoy his spirited works at outdoor Shakespeare in the Park productions ranging from free to fee.

One of California’s finest free shows, Shakespeare by the Sea, travels to 17 cities in 2019, with outdoor venues ranging from beautiful, seaside park Point Fermin in San Pedro and nearby ocean view lawns of the luxury Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, to Roxbury Park in Beverly Hills, Don Knabe Regional Park in Cerritos and Virginia Avenue Park in Santa Monica — just for starters. At its southernmost destination you can catch this traveling troupe perform at Soka University Campus Green in Aliso Viejo.

This year Shakespeare by the Sea performs The Comedy of Errors and Henry V, which also can be viewed at Vallejo’s Shakespeare in the Park productions in the Bay Area in 2019.

From San Francisco’s SF Shakes performing at multiple Bay Area venues to San Diego’s The Old Globe annual Shakespeare Festival at Lowell Davies Festival Theatre in Balboa Park, there’s much excitement when fans see the current season selections.

We keep running tabs at SeeCalifornia.com and noticed the classics reign supreme this year. Look for Othello, Macbeth, Twelfth Night, The Winter’s Tale and more great Shakespeare works.
