Sonoma Coast – Where the Wild Flowers Blossom in the Spring

Published on: February 11, 2012

As you drive along the California coast about 100 miles north of San Francisco, you see miles of coastal cliffs, curvy roads, and then a special treat–The Sea Ranch–the biggest thing around for what seems like an eternity of open space. The planned community comprised of simple timber homes that blend with nature sits on plateaus above the Pacific Ocean.

A special time to visit is Spring when wildflowers are in bloom, ranging in colors — yellow, white, lavender, pink, purple, red and orange.  Take your best camera equipment to try to photograph them. You’ll see whale migrations, as well, so take a telephoto lens if you’re a serious photographer.

The Sea Ranch is a residential community of just under 2,000 houses, nearly half used as vacation rentals. The architectural plan required that homes have site specific relationship with the landscape. The Sea Ranch Chapel, designed by James T. Hubbell, ties the experience all together, and is definitely a must-see stop on that long and winding road. For those who are seeking a one night stay just to hang around, take a hike, and get the feel of the place, you can book a room at the lodge at The Sea Ranch. Many rooms have ocean views and guests can wander the trails in back of the property facing the coast. These marked trails include wildflowers, dew drops, maybe a rainfall or misting of rain that turns quickly to sunshine, and of course you’ll see wild deer munching on the flowers and grasses next to you.
