Like big box stores seeing decline in traffic (Toys”R”Us is among the latest casualties,) attendance at movie theaters has also seen a down-tick in the past several years. That doesn’t mean movies are down and out for the count, however. If you look at the popularity of movies at California beaches and parks, and the long list of film festivals the state hosts, you’d think the situation is quite the opposite.

California Movies In Parks

What’s hot in 2018? COCO, Despicable Me 3 and Wonder Woman are among favorites.

  • ALBANY: Among the City of Albany’s numerous programs bringing neighbors together is the Community Block Party initiative, encouraging residents to host movie get-togethers in local parks. The city can assist with the process, explaining costs (such as a film license ranging from $100 to $300.)
  • VACAVILLE: The city’s recreation department introduced Dive-In Movies in 2018, joining other municipalities hosting Big Splash entertainment in and out of the water.
  • BELMONT SHORE: Who doesn’t love curling your toes in the sand as the sun goes down over the Pacific Ocean? At Alfredo’s Beach Club the public can watch free movie screenings outdoors on the beach!
  • REDWOOD CITY: “Movies on the Square” transforms the city’s top entertainment venue into a fantastic, outdoor theater. Other places where you’ll find a similar urban vibe include Segerstrom Center’s Julianne and George Argyros Plaza in Costa Mesa.
  • CALISTOGA: Campout & A Movie. It’s a staycation in Logvy Park.
  • ARCADIA: Concerts & Movies. Many cities such as Arcadia combine their free, outdoor summer concerts with movie showings.
