Like Day & Night — The left photos show Sunset Beach, California’s holiday parade which has gone by various names — NO Parade, YOT Parade, and No Boat Parade, to name a few. The Grand Marshal is often self-proclaimed, and the entrants are enthusiasts who shows up on Dec.17, 2016 for the irreverent event. It’s the antithesis to Huntington Beach’s  Cruise of Lights which takes place Dec.16-23 – shown in the right photo.

Back story — Several years ago when the community of Sunset Beach (1,000+ pop.) was swallowed up by the City of Huntington Beach (195,000+ pop.), Sunset Beach citizens were promised that they wouldn’t be forced to change their ways too much. This week the Huntington Beach Planning Commission tried to accommodate those wishes by modifying its regulations for building houses on the sand in Sunset Beach. And this week two annual traditions exemplify how different the little town and big city are. Sunset Beach continues a proud heritage more than 100 years strong!
