When searching for that ultimate “Surf City” in California, don’t overlook Ventura, home to half a dozen or so beaches. Right near the border of the city is the famous Rincon surfing beach known for three sets of waves that surfers line up to ride. Shown is Surfer’s Knoll beach sign, San Buenaventura Beach next to Crowne Plaza hotel and Ventura Pier, and two surfer dudes stoked over an evening of great surfing.

Ventura is a very special place that overlooks the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. San Buenaventura (Ventura’s real Spanish name which means “good fortune”) is steeped in history dating back thousands of years. The Mission reminds visitors of the Chumash natives who were recruited by Spanish padres to build Mission San Buenaventura, a must see on your visit. If you love intrigue, see the haunted Ventura Courthouse and stay in one of the haunted hotels, but if you just want easy beach access, there are several great places to stay with beaches and harbors right on site.  Located just south of Santa Barbara and far enough away north of L.A., Ventura has become a popular hideaway for the celebrity crowd.
