Dateline: California Mardi Gras. Mention Mardi Gras and most think “New Orleans,” but California has a few celebrations up its sleeves. Festivals, parades and events with costumes, drinks and beads take place in Nevada City, Kelseyville, El Centro, Truckee, Fresno, Paradise, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego in 2017. This year Mardi Gras officially lands on February 28 (always 47 days before Easter Sunday.)

French for “fat Tuesday,” Mardi Gras is the last day of feasting before Lent on Ash Wednesday. In New Orleans, a city with a population of less than 500,000, there are more than 100 parades during Mardi Gras, and they’re generally free. This is where some California destinations separate from Southern tradition — the biggest parties in our state such as San Diego’s Gaslamp Mardi Gras charge fees.
