This is the Dawning of the Age of Aquariums

Published on: February 23, 2012

There are well over a dozen aquariums the public can see in California, including world class facilities that bring attention to the Pacific and world oceans. You might say it is a dawning of an age–interest in the sea is  increasing, and California has grown into an eco-conscious state filled with citizens and attracting visitors who want to see  the sea prosper and thrive.

Breaking ground when it opened in 1984, the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) turns 28 on October 20, 2012. Winning many awards for its facilities when it first opened, the MBA has won awards in recent years for its outreach, creating a fish dining guide for consumers and restaurants to learn what fish are on endangered species lists, and recommending that the public not eat them, while offering other choices.

Following in the footsteps of Monterey, Long Beach made the bold choice to use the same famed architects to build their smaller aquarium next to their shoreline. Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach similarly has grown from its splashy opening to include special programs all about the sea–what to eat, the benefits of kelp, ocean days, etc. They even offer a diver training program for volunteer divers to participate in a variety of projects at the aquarium and out in the Pacific Ocean. It’s really great!

Recently the success of Legoland California and its growth from one theme park into three attractions, included the grand opening of a stand-alone Sea Life Aquarium.  Located in Carlsbad, San Diego County, it is but one of the many water-worlds you can explore in San Diego. There’s also SeaWorld San Diego, San Diego Zoo and Birch Aquarium.

We’ve barely scratched the surface of California’s aquariums. Vallejo’s Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro and many more offer help youngster and adults to experience their very own dawning of a new world and new age. Oceans make up 75% of the planet–and there’s so much to discover about this water-world that sustains us!
