When the sweetest ice cream shop, Penny Ice Creamery, opened in Santa Cruz recently, a rainbow lit up the sky. And the owners took that as a positve sign. The Penny Ice (Creamery) is the result of Chef Kendra L. Baker and business partner Zachary E. Davis’ combined efforts and passion for food. If you have any doubt, listen to these desserts:  Candy Cap Mushroom Ice Cream, Valrhona white chocolate mousse on the bottom, tangarine foam, and topped with pistachio ice cream; and the rich, Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Tart with Chocolate Mousse, Mascarpone Hazelnut Ice Cream, Blood Oranges, and Whipped Cream. Last week’s flavors: Cayenne Dried Apricot, Burnt Cinnamon, Kiwi Sorbet, Earl of Grey, Blood Orange, Bitter Caramel, Verve Coffee with Chocolate Almond Praline, Tahitian Vanilla Bean, and Dark Chocolate Sorbet.  The open kitchen and showcased production room allow everyone to see what goes into making their delicious treats. Here’s something extremely cool –from the owners:

“We know parking is tight in Downtown Santa Cruz, but we’re very excited that the Santa Cruz City Government has agreed to sit down and talk with us about taking over the parking lot behind 913 Cedar Street to create a space for two on-site Penny dairy cows! Our goal is to showcase traditional animal husbandry and sustainable dairy farming methods, combined with the latest in vertical pasturing which will yield over an acre of lush grazing area per cow. We go before the Downtown Commission on May 23, 2013, and hopefully they will swiftly recommend the project for approval by the City Council.”
