If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you 100 times that the Callifornia Poppy Festival in Lancaster is coming! The state flower is the California poppy and near Lancaster (15 miles outside of town) poppies bloom each spring along the hillsides at Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. Here’s what the on-location poppy-watchers are saying on Wildflower Bloom Status- 3/25/13: “It looks like we won’t have much of a wildflower season this year. Many of the poppy plants that germinated after the March rains didn’t make it through the recent hot days, and several of the ones that managed to squeeze out a single flower have desiccated from the winds mid-bloom. There are about 60 poppy flowers in the whole park at this weekend’s count, but the plants that haven’t flowered yet may not make it much longer.” California Poppy Festival on April 20 & 21, 2013 is definitely a go, however! Its setting is Lancaster, a desert locale approx. an hour northeast of L.A. near Palmdale and Edwards Air Force Base
