IONE, CALIF.–Preston Castle is a 46,000 square-foot red brick structure that includes four floors as well as an annex with a basement. Opened in 1894 as a California State facility for boys, it was called Preston School of Industry. Among its famous residents was the man who played Rochester on the Jack Benny Show.  Preston Castle closed its doors in 1960 when new facilities were completed. The building remained vacant and fading into disrepair until The Preston Castle Foundation received a 50-year lease for the property in 2001. Tours of the castle take place on the first and third Saturdays and select Thursdays, March through October from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., reservations not required.  Night time ghost tours are a different beast. They require reservations and are offered approx. once per month. They do sell out! SEE prestoncastle.com for details.
