A Turkey Drive

Get along little turkeys — one of the oddest events in Western History — a Turkey Drive! Turkeys were scarce across the Old West but thanks to an enterprising Californian the residents of Carson City, NV, enjoyed holiday turkey dinners in 1866. Henry C. Hooker had his 500 turkeys walk through warm tar, then sand, to give them protection while making the 60-mile journey between Hangtown and Carson City through the snow. Here’s the story!
