SEE CALIFORNIA RAIN & SNOW — where the dumpage continues at Heavenly Lake Tahoe shown in photo

Southern California received a drenching from the El Niño effect this week. The backbone of California’s water supply and delivery system is in the north, however, where snow is falling Northern California’s mountains. Mammoth Mountain reports 18-25″ of new snow with more expected. Tahoe’s Heavenly is hoping for approx. 7″ total from the current storm system.  Since California’s water infrastructure was built with a focus on capturing snowmelt to buoy the state through summer and fall, this is positive news!

  • California has approx. 1,500 reservoirs.
  • Nearly 75% of California’s 43 million acre-feet of reservoir space is north of Fresno.
  • Southern California has more than 75% of the demand for irrigation and drinking water.
  • The man-made water network can deliver snowmelt 700 miles between Mount Shasta and San Diego.
  • An inch of rain in L.A. can produce 10 billion gallons of wasted runoff flowing into the Pacific Ocean.
  • Carlsbad desalination plant opened in Dec. 2015 to supply nearly 7% of San Diego County’s regional water needs, but not without environmental impacts.
