Weekend Pier Celebrations

Published on: October 01, 2014

Santa Cruz Wharf is having a Centennial Celebration party on Oct. 4, 2014 (cityofsantacruz.com) in honor of the wooden structure’s 100 year anniversary. There’s a lot to celebrate–this is the longest wooden wharf on the coast of the United States!  The public is invited to the free event which starts at 10 a.m. and culminates in the grand fireworks display over the Pacific Ocean at 9 p.m.

Down coast several hundred miles Ventura Pier is also having a party on Oct. 4. Pier Under the Stars Food & Wine Tasting Benefit (pierintothefuture.org) pays homage to the 8th longest pier in the state of California, also made of wood, and first built in 1872. The two public structures, both beloved icons of favorite beach and surfing destinations, share common bonds in offering a fun event on the same day, and concerns for public officials. While a $1 million endowment exists to maintain Ventura Pier, the fundraising party this weekend helps keep the cash reserves coming. In Santa Cruz the City has published an Engineering Report of the half-mile long landmark, identifying repairs and upgrades to the Wharf necessary to see it through to its next major anniversary.
