Who Needs New York? California Christmas Destinations

Growing up in the Midwest (which is actually 1,000 miles closer to the East Coast than West,) one of our most coveted Christmas getaways was New York. We routinely went through our list, checking off must-see attractions such as The Rink at Rockefeller Center, Broadway shows, Macy’s holiday displays and 5th Avenue strolls. Winter weather is usually cold, the streets packed with people, and Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball Drop is the ultimate in trying to stay warm with a million strangers, including some pick-pockets!  But still, it is fun.

When visitors come to California from east of the Rockies they don’t necessarily have their minds set on ice skating at Union Square or looking at Gump’s holiday display in San Francisco. Nor does their checklist include watching Linda Ronstadt’s former boyfriend, Jerry Brown, light the Capitol Tree where Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger once held the same honors. And seeing the Nutcracker Ballet at Dolby Theater in Hollywood–eh.

Visitors don’t freely gush over Christmas in California but are eager to comment, ” I should have stayed home. It’s warmer there today.” California, like a fine wine that improves with age, has the best Christmas holidays in the U.S.  We begin the journey in Sacramento….>
