For those who embrace tradition, one of the best Christmas destinations in California is Sacramento, the state's Capitol City.

With the launch of the tree lighting ceremony on the West Steps of the State Capitol featuring a beautiful fir tree from either the U.S. Forest Service or the state's Demonstration Forest, you know holiday season has arrived. The lighting ceremony is community focused, featuring local youth, a holiday band and the spectacular tree lighting the night.

Traditions are gifts to children who learn about and experience wonderment in life. The Sacramento Nutcracker Ballet is one such gift which features children who work hard to learn their parts in the holiday show. Seldom do  kids get primary roles in this challenging, but beloved ballet, so they are exposed to excellence. Audiences love The Nutcracker musical score, costumes, and storyline. It never grows old!

Old Sacramento Theatre of Lights takes place on the streets of one of California's most authentic, historic places. It's really the perfect spot for this recreation of the 1823 poem -- A Visit from St. Nicholas, more popularly known as 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. This free event provides captivating, holiday storytelling.

Sacramento Santa's Parade at Capitol Park takes place annually in December. A fun event for all ages includes marching bands, vintage cars and Santa, of course.

A boat parade like no other, the Capitol City Yacht Club Lighted Boat Parade travels under the beautifully-lit Tower Bridge, a unique structure designed by Alfred Eichler.

Ice skating in Sacramento has been a holiday tradition for more than 20 years. Put on your scarf and mittens to get in the holiday mood at this special event in the heart of the city!

After Christmas comes to an end, Sacramento celebrates the new year with a fireworks display! New Year's Eve Sky Spectacular Presented by the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau is a spectacular fireworks show over the Sacramento River and Tower Bridge at 9 p.m. and midnight.
