Newport Beach, CA–The World’s Longest Ferris Wheel made 25 revolutions for more than 90,000 riders last year at the legendary Balboa Fun Zone, according to officials. Each ride took around 5 minutes and could last 10 to 15 minutes, depending on volume.

The Eli Bridge Company, American-made, 41-foot high, 5-ton, backward-spinning, electric Ferris Wheel, takes up to 36 people in its 12 “cars” for unbelievable views of Newport Harbor, Balboa Island and the Pacific Ocean.

For many, the Ferris Wheel has been the highlight of Fun Zone visitors since 1936. The current magical wheel, built in 1985, features more than 600 light bulbs that flash one of seven different colors at the same time each night. It’s star is LED lighted. The unique symbol is enjoyed by spectators on land, water and in the air.

Because the wheel has received media publicity and been seen on TV shows like “The OC,” people come from around the World to ride it–Australia, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, China, Japan, Brazil…. “Some even propose marriage on it,” said Patrick Moore, who, along with his wife, Lisa, purchased the popular attraction in 2006. “We have another wheel in storage,” said Patrick, who started off as a Fun Zone manager 23 years ago.

The awe-inspiring, memory-creating $3 ride, which has its thrilling ups and downs, opens daily at 11am (next to the the Balboa Ferry) at 600 East Bay Ave., Newport Beach. It usually doesn’t close until Sunset (or later depending on crowds) but it is closed on Christmas and rainy days.

“People want to trade me jobs,” said the friendly Long Beach State grad, “but few have such a beautiful outdoor office. And the commute’s a short walk to work.” The Moores celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Fun Zone in 2011, and plan on providing joyful Ferris Wheel rides until at least the 100th Anniversary of the Fun Zone in 2036 (when their current lease runs out).
