YoYos:

  • Each year in October exuberant youth and adults look forward to making the trek to Chico, home of the National YoYo Museum, the World’s Largest YoYo, and National YoYo Contest. The contest takes place in the Chico City Plaza on October 5, 2013.  The grueling competition isn’t exactly the same as Monday Night Football, and the stakes (cash prizes) are whole lot smaller. But the audience is mesmerized by high-flying  YoYo spins, dips and walks.

Frisbee:

  • Just like the Duncan YoYo which came from California, the Frisbee was invented by another Californian, Walter Fredrick Morrison, who initially sold “Flyin’ Cake Pans” on the beaches of Santa Monica. During World War II he learned aerodynamics flying his P-47 Thunderbolt in Italy, and transferred that knowledge into the making of the Pluto Platter, the predecessor to today’s Frisbee. When California inventor Ed Headrick got into the act, he used these new-fangled Frisbees in a spanking-new sport the world loved — Disc Golf!

Pinball:

California’s love affair with “fringe” sports also includes pinball. There’s a pinball museum in Alameda and California Xtreme Pinball Contest each summer in Santa Clara.
