It doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full when it comes to animals in California’s zoos and wildlife parks this week. As long as they are alive and safe from wildfires, for now that’s good enough!
Not all animals survived the fire situation. At private residences such as Patti Meyer’s home in Kenwood she escaped the fire but lost her eight Bernese mountain dogs, four Bernese puppies and two miniature dachshunds. Some owners saw their family pets run off as fire approached, not knowing if they will ever be seen again. But as for the zoos, here’s some hopeful news:
Santa Rosa – Safari West is not taking guests till Nov.1, 2017. Friday, October 13th updates (safariwest.com) include: The animals are safe, secure, and surprisingly relaxed considering the situation. While we’re still in the midst of an active fire, things are relatively calm at the Safari West Wildlife Preserve. The animals are safe and accounted for with full bellies and plenty of water to drink.
San Francisco Zoo (sfzoo.org) offers free admission until Oct.15 if you live in Napa, Sonoma, Solano, Lake or Mendocino Counties and have been evacuated or are in a shelter because of the ongoing fires, now.
Orange County Zoo (ocparks.com) canceled Halloween programs Oct.13-14 and says: “The Orange County Zoo is closed until further notice due to the Canyon Fire 2. Zoo animals were evacuated for the fire and have returned safely. “
