When the 2nd oldest gorilla in the world, Vila (60), died last week at San Diego Zoo Safari Park, many hearts were broken. Three months earlier zoo staff celebrated the critically endangered, Africa-born gorilla’s birthday with cake and treats. Even though the matriarch of five generations outlived the species average by 20 years, San Diegans had grown to love her over the 55+ years she lived there since her arrival in 1959.
Animal attraction can lead to strong bonds, and many zoos in California celebrate Valentine’s Day with special exhibits, parties, activities and dinners celebrating LOVE.
