Huntington Beach Beaches:

Newsletter by Chris MacDonald

I'd like to wish the following people a Very Happy Birthday. They are: KTLA Channel 5 News Anchor/Reporter Chris Burrous, Former Huntington Beach Mayor Peter Green, My Cousin's Husband Jon Marino, Huntington Beach Resident Susan Schaben and Huntington Beach Amigos De Bolsa Chica Docent Jamie Pavlat.

Huntington Beach Police Chief' Ken Small's Administrative Assistant Karin Reed says:
DUI Checkpoint Nets 4 Arrests - The Huntington Beach Police Department conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Saturday December 29, 2012 between the hours of 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

DUI/Drivers License checkpoints help lower DUI related deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drug impaired, bring about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies. Here are some of our statistics from Saturday's checkpoint: 1440 Vehicles through the checkpoint; 618 Vehicles Screened; 3 DUI-Alcohol suspects arrested; 1 DUI-Drug impaired suspects arrested; 2 Drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended/revoked; 1 Arrested on other Criminal Charges

Huntington Beach Police Department will be conducting another DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on January 12, 2013 in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways. The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1!

The Huntington Beach Public Works Department Construction Manager Eric Charlonne says: Main Street Rehabilitation Project
The Main Street Rehabilitation Project is nearing completion. The project, which extends from Utica Avenue to Adams Avenue, consists of grinding the existing pavement, removing failed roadway sections, and overlaying the street with rubberized asphalt concrete. The bulk of this work was completed over the Huntington Beach High School winter break, which ended last Friday. Improvements also include limited replacement of concrete curb, gutter, sidewalk, and installation of ADA access ramps where needed. Manholes and water valve assemblies will be adjusted to grade and traffic loops and striping will be replaced over the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Huntington Beach Tree Society President Jean Nagy says:
The HB Tree Society received a wonderful grant from the Employees Community Fund of Boeing CA. Currently the City is reviewing the landscape plans that we had Guy Stivers draw.

This is a News Item from Third District Long Beach City Councilman Gary DeLong:

The Belmont Plaza Pool will be temporarily closed, effective yesterday, due to a draft structural analysis that concludes the facility is seismically unsafe in the event of a moderate earthquake.

The City is acting in an abundance of caution for patrons and staff while City engineers review the draft analysis and inspect the facility to confirm the extent of its structural safety.

The temporary closure is expected to last approximately three weeks, and will only affect the indoor pool facility. After the review and inspections are complete, a decision will be made to reopen or keep the pool closed. The outdoor pools, locker rooms, and adjacent La Palapa Del-Mar restaurant will remain open at this time.

City staff is working with the aquatics community to minimize disruptions and help to identify alternative options and facilities.

The seismic issue recently came to light as a result of the analysis currently underway related to the revitalization plan for the entire pool complex, which opened in August 1968. The City Council authorized staff to develop options to modernize the existing pool complex.

Within 30 days City staff will present the City Council with long-term revitalization options that may include temporary solutions to restore pool access.
