Huntington Beach News

Huntington Beach Beaches: I'd like to start this newsletter congratulating Huntington Beach Residents Mark & Christina Nelson on their new Daughter Aubrey Nelson.

Wishing the following people a very Happy Birthday. They are: Huntington Beach Mom Jamie Garber, Huntington Beach Resident Sami Swanson, Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum Founder Natalie Kotsch, Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum Trustee Jodi McKay, Huntington Beach Kite Connection Owner Dave Shenkman and Huntington Beach Resident Michael Griffith.

The Honorable Huntington Beach Police Chief Ken Small's Administrative Assistant Karin Reed asked me to mention This Item:
MADD Red Ribbon Week — October 21-27, 2012
Every October, during Red Ribbon Week, schools around the country encourage young people to live a drug-free life. Alcohol is the most commonly used drug by youth—more than all illegal drugs combined, in fact. That's why MADD wants to help young people take a stand against underage alcohol use, help schools educate young people about the dangers of alcohol, and equip parents to have potentially lifesaving conversations about alcohol with their kids. Together, by engaging youth, parents, and the community to prevent underage drinking and support the minimum drinking age of 21, we can reduce the deaths and injuries that come from underage drinking. Whether you are a teen, parent or educator use your power to make a difference and save lives during Red Ribbon Week and always.

The Huntington Beach Public Works Construction Manager Eric Charlonne asked me to mention These Items:

ADA Accessibility Improvements at the Civic Center
On October 15, City Council awarded a construction contract to make ADA improvements to the Civic Center to better accommodate individuals with disabilities. The Public Works Department was awarded funding under the Community Development Block Grant program for the construction of ADA Improvements at the Civic Center. The work was planned in consultation with a licensed architect and accessibility specialist. This project includes, but is not limited to, accessible parking and path of travel from the east parking lot to the first floor lobby, glass separation wall at the first floor lobby to allow after-hours use of elevator and accessibility to lower lobby and Council Chambers, accessibility improvements to City Council Chambers and Caucus room, restrooms, ramps, elevators, drinking fountains, public service counters, doors and signage.

Distance Derby Street Closures
On Sunday, October 21 the City of Huntington Beach will be hosting the Annual Distance Derby 10 mile run, supporting Project Self Sufficiency. The event will take place on several of our local streets with street closures beginning at 4:00 AM and the street reopening at about 10:00 AM. The primary streets closed during the event are Pacific Coast Highway, between Beach Boulevard and Warner Avenue; Seapoint Street; and Garfield Avenue, between Edwards Street and Seapoint Street. Access to other streets intersecting these street closure locations will also be affected during the event. Traffic will be detoured around the closures. Motorists should anticipate delays and avoid travel through the area if possible. More information is available at www.beachderby.com.

Main Street and Garfield Avenue Rehabilitation
Work on the Main Street and Garfield Avenue rehabilitation project will begin the week of October 15 and be completed by late January 2013. Main Street, from Utica Avenue to Adams Avenue, and Garfield Avenue from Delaware Street to Beach Blvd. were last rehabilitated in 1972. The projects consist of asphalt rehabilitation including: grinding the existing pavement, removing failed roadway sections, and overlaying the street with rubberized asphalt concrete (RAC). Improvements also include limited replacement of concrete curb, gutter, sidewalk, and access ramps where needed.

A two-inch layer of RAC uses over 2,000 waste tires per lane mile. The project will divert more than 3400 waste tires that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Including this project, the use of RAC in the rehabilitation of the City's arterial streets has resulted in the diversion of over 239,000 waste tires.
