This is an Important Note from Karin Reed who is Huntington Beach Police Chief Ken Small's Administrative Assistant. Karin Says:

HUNTINGTON BEACH POLICE TO COMBAT DUI DEATHS AND INJURIES
THROUGH TRAFFIC SAFETY PROGRAM

The Huntington Beach Police Department has been awarded a new traffic safety grant for a year-long program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on our roadways. The $174,209.00 grant awarded by the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to Huntington Beach will aid in the city's ongoing effort to improve traffic safety and the quality of life. Special traffic enforcement measures will be instituted by the Huntington Beach Police Department as part of an on-going commitment to keep our roadways safe through both enforcement and education.

This grant will assist in efforts to deal with traffic safety problems and to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in traffic collisions. The grant activities will specifically target DUI offences, suspended or revoked driver's license violations, red light violations, speeding violations and seatbelt violations. This will be done through the use of DUI/driver's license checkpoints, DUI/driver's license saturation patrols and special enforcement operations.

Thanks to the dedicated hard work of agencies such as the Huntington Beach Police Department, California has the fewest traffic fatalities since 1944,” said OTS Director Christopher J. Murphy. While this is good news, we know that only by keeping the pressure on, through enforcement and public awareness can we hope to sustain these declines and save lives.”

DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints are a key component of the grant. These highly visible, widely publicized events are meant to deter impaired driving, not to increase arrests. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies.

This grant also provides drug impairment training to help combat the increasing problem of drivers under the influence of legal and illegal substances. Grant funding will allow officers to receive specialized training to detect impaired drivers under the influence of legal and illegal drugs. This training will provide on-the-spot assessment of drivers suspected of drug impairment.

For a third year in a row, Huntington Beach Police Officers will conduct a special motorcycle safety enforcement operation. Motorcycle fatalities have finally dropped in California, following a decade long rise in deaths. Huntington Beach Police Officers will be conducting specialized enforcement efforts throughout the next twelve months. Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas and events where motorcycle crashes and incidents have occurred. Officers will be cracking down on traffic violations made by regular vehicle drivers and motorcyclists that result in far too many motorcycle collisions, injuries and deaths.

We are on the right path with declining fatalities,” said Murphy. We have to stick to that path so that some day we can reach the vision we all share – Toward zero deaths, every 1 counts.”

Funding for this program is from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT PANCAKE BREAKFAST

October 7, 2011, Huntington Beach, CA - What are your plans for New Year's Day? This January 1, 2012, hundreds of "Lionhearted" folks will be splashing into chilly surf near the Huntington Beach Pier to celebrate the New Year for the 12th annual Surf City Splash. All the "sane" people will be watching from the pier above or the safe shore as the New Year's Day revelers splash and frolic in the water before running back to hug their friends and celebrate a fresh start to the New Year. The HB International Surfing Museum will benefit from donations received for certificates of Lionheartedness" or "Sanity" at this annual event. There will be a craft fair on Pier Plaza for the day.

"We'll be washing off the old of 2011," says Lee Love, who has organized the event since the beginning of the new millennium when Huntington Beach resident Michael Parks jumped in the water with a few friends as something crazy to do for New Year's Day. The "Polar Plunge" was renamed HB Pier Plaza Plunge by Love, who was then President of the Huntington Beach Sunrise Rotary Club. Since then, Love has transitioned to the Surf City Lions branch of the HB Host Lions Club and changed the event name to Surf City Splash.
Local Lions host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the pier each New Year's Day. Donations for the food and beverages support Lion charities such as The International Surfing Museum, Canine Companions for Independence, Lions Hearing Clinic and Research Center, SightFirst Foundation, Therapeutic Riding Center, Project Self-Sufficiency, etc.
The Downtown Business Improvement District is participating in the Splash as part of the "SCORE" (Surf City Offers for Restaurants and Entertainment) program. All SPLASH Certificates come with a SCORE card which can be used at participating businesses for a discount or free gift.
Revelers will be dressed in glittery New Year's party hats and other costumes which will be judged and recognized along with the oldest and youngest participants and furthest distance traveled. A special award will go to the largest group, organization or club. Recognition will also go to local volunteers and city officials.
Save the date, and plan to join us for this "Splash Tradition". Online pre-registration forms for the HB Surf City Splash 2012 are available at www.HBSurfCitySplash.com . More information is also available regarding vendor opportunities and sponsorships.
