COMMUNITY RECREATION SERVICES Belmont Plaza Pool opened in August of 1968 prior to hosting the Olympic Trials that year. Men's and Women's Diving, Men's Swimming and Men's Water Polo were held at the pool which featured an underwater television and sound system. The T-shaped, eight lane, million-gallon, all tile pool provided extremely smooth water due to extra wide and extra deep gutters and tiny water inlets at the bottom of the pool. The cost of construction in 1968 was $3.7 million. The pool continues to be a popular choice for both public and competitive use. Records continue to be broken at the pool as recent as last week when University of California, Berkeley sophomore Tom Shields broke the Pac- 10 meet record, the Pac-10 overall record and the NCAA record swimming the 200 yard butterfly in 1:40.31. The past six weeks have been extremely busy with an estimated 35,000 athletes and spectators visiting the pool to attend swim and dive meets. Each year, the competitive season kicks off with the Junior Olympic Swimming Championships for swimmers ages 12 years & under and 13 years & over. Junior Olympics are run under the auspices of the Amateur Athlete Union (AAU). Since 1967, the AAU has sponsored Junior Olympics each year to give talented young athletes a chance to compete on a national scale. These two meets are followed by the Pacific Coast Swim and Dive Conference featuring such California schools as Azusa Pacific, Biola, Chapman, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz and Cal State East Bay. Seattle University and the University of Alaska also compete in this conference. The Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference meet follows with athletes from Cal Tech, Occidental College, Pomona, Redlands, Whittier, Cal Lutheran, LaVerne and the Claremont- Mudd-Scripps Colleges. This year, the first ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Swimming and Diving Championships were held at the pool. The MPSF Meet included teams from Cal State Bakersfield, University of the Pacific, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Northern Colorado University, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara and the University of San Diego. The Men's Pac-10 Swimming Championships wrapped up the Belmont Plaza Pool college meet season onMarch 5 with Stanford winning its 30th straight Pac-10 title, a streak unmatched by any NCAA team in any NCAA sport. The competitive element is only a small part of what takes place at Belmont Plaza Pool. More than 200,000 people use the pool for competition, training, fitness and fun during the year. Most weekday mornings, an average of 100 patrons have visited the pool before 9 a.m. for lap swimming or water exercise classes. Swim lessons for all ages are offered during the afternoons and evenings. Many park programs enjoy visiting both the indoor and outdoor pools at Belmont Plaza each week during the summer. Operating hours, admission fees and information about youth and adult classes can be found at www.lbparks.org or by calling (562) 570-1806. Highlights include American Red Cross swim lesson programs, LA84 Foundation sponsored Swim, Dive, Water Polo and Synchronized Swim Team programs and the International Sea Festival Novice Swim.
