Seal Beach Centennial Beach Party!

Seal Beach, CA-- Thousands of people recently celebrated Seal Beach's Centennial at a special free Beach Party and BBQ. M&M Surf School taught surfing; the SB Beach Volleyball Club gave a clinic; there were Sand Castle building demonstrations; a BBQ (delicious hot dogs) by the Seal Beach Lion's Club and a Horseshoe Competition led by Marine Safety Lifeguard Chief Joe Bailey. And one of the most popular events was the modeling of bathing suits that recreated the styles of the past (with 33 participants).

"We wanted to make it fun for everyone," said Barbara Wright, who helped put it on. And fun it was as kids and adults of all ages had the time of their lives.

Seal Beach has always been known as a fun place and once had a roller coaster, arcade and even gambling halls. Even today, it's tree-lined main street, lined by picturesque shops, reminds one of the quaintness of Carmel. Several movies have been filmed here.

Mayor Ellery Deaton and Councilman Mike Varipapa enjoyed the festivities that brought shouts of glee from participants. It truly was a free family day at one of the neatest beaches and piers in California. In fact, when it's hot elsewhere, a stroll along the Seal Beach Pier usually brings cooler, refreshing winds.

Helping make this memorable day possible were the Seal Beach Lions, Baytown Realty, Sun Newspapers, United Methodist Church of Seal Beach and the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce.

"We had a blast here today," said Molly Nelson, who brought her four kids to the celebration. "This is our favorite beach and you can see Long Beach and Palos Verdes from here. It's just such a terrific setting. It's a friendly, safe community and we're proud to help in its celebration."
