  • January - The Ford Motor Company announces an eight-hour workday and a minimum wage of $5 for a day's labor.
  • February - Charlie Chaplin makes his film début in the comedy short Making a Living.
  • On April 23, two days after the bombardment of Vera Cruz, the Los Angeles Battalion of the 7th California Infantry, under the command of Col. W. G. Schreiber, was directed to the border town of Calexico, California, to protect lives and property.
  • April - Babe Ruth's 1st professional game (as a pitcher) is a 6-hit 6-0 win
  • May- Woodrow Wilson signs a Mother's Day proclamation.
  • On May 30, 1914, Lassen Peak awoke from a 27,000-year-long slumber when it was shaken by a steam explosion.
  • California Bell Company established.- creators of El Camino Real bell.
  • John Muir died on Christmas Eve, 1914.
  • Model Eugenical Sterilization Law of the "socially inadequate" -- people supported in institutions or "maintained wholly or in part by public expense, feebleminded, insane, criminalistic, epileptic, inebriate, diseased, blind, deaf; deformed; and dependent" grew in popularity. The vast majority of sterilizations (2,500) took place in California.
