DEL MAR - The Holiday of Lights at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is the largest animated drive-through light show on the West Coast. More than 400 displays located around the Del Mar Racetrack on a 1.5 mile route can be seen either by car or a hayride offered. In 2011 over 21,000 vehicles drove through the display, and close to 2,000 took the hayride. The popular annual event is one of the few remaining commercial drive-through displays in California (Los Angeles DWP used to hold a drive-thru event at Griffith Park but it has been dark for several years and continues to be in 2012.)
Holiday of Lights at Del Mar Fairgrounds, Del Mar, CA invites you to pack the car with family and friends for a pleasurable ride through a wonderland of colorful light displays creating fantasy scenes during the holiday season.
A huge arcade of lights welcomes guests who enter the drive-through display and as you travel through the 1.5 mile course you'll see images such as Santa steering a sleigh with reindeer through the sky. Nearby a dinosaur munches on grass next to a palm tree decked with decorative lights accompanied to themed music..
Del Mar Fairgrounds is easily accessed off Interstate 5 at Via de la Valle. Enter the Fairgrounds at the Main Lot on Jimmy Durante Boulevard. Because of safety concerns, motorcycles and other two-wheeled vehicles are not permitted to tour Holiday of Lights.
Weather is notoriously pleasant --it seldom drops below the 50s at night in San Diego so you'll be just fine with a jacket or coat on as you cruise through the San Diego County wonderland with your car windows rolled down.
Transformed from its meeting and events venue featuring one of the busiest and best-attended county fairs in the nation, Del Mar is the home to San Diego Fair held annually in June / July. The fairground is near the beach and Pacific Ocean, making it one of the finest fairs and events to attend, thanks to those cool ocean breezes and fantastic weather.
