stringing from the tip of the Peninsula up to Appian Way to Rainbow Lagoon, Alamitos Bay Marina, along the Peninsula, Spinnaker Bay, Rainbow Harbor, Scherer Park, El Dorado Park West and Heartwell Park. There are additional trees on the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier, at the Station 34 lifeguard station, and in the center median of Belmont Shore's Second Street.

Started in 1949 when Don May, the owner of Belmont Shore's former Leilani Hut, a Polynesian style bar and restaurant where Legends is now, floated the idea of with one real Christmas tree in Alamitos Bay.
Grown into 60 teepee shaped wooden “trees” on eight foot square docks anchored around the city.
By 1953, the live tree was replaced with a wooden pyramid frame, creating the distinctive three dimensional triangle design
Featured in magazines worldwide.
In the 1970s, when budget cuts threatened to end the program, the late Marlene Middough organized donations for necessary maintenance and electrical costs and formed the Trees in the Bay Committee.
Today donations from numerous organizations include Long Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, Spinnaker Cove Slip Owners Association, Alamitos Heights Improvement Association and Alamitos Bay Beach Preservation Group.
