The Cornish-inspired "pasty" popular with California's gold miners over 150 years ago has seen a resurgence with sports fans as the perfect food for the big ball game.

Visiting Los Alamitos Hospital recently with time to wander the neighborhood I was walking to Starbucks and came across Pasty Kitchen along the way. It is only a block from the hospital. Intrigued by the sign which said, "A Meal in a Crust" I watched several guys make round pastries the size of softballs (and bigger). I wandered in this clean, efficient bakery and noticed the small pasty was under $3. What the heck! I'll try the chicken. It was good but a little flat for my taste.

Back another day at the hospital I wandered again to the little building along Katella Blvd. and tried the beef pasty. I devoured it -- and highly recommended the beef.

Using industrial size metal containers they mix small cubed carrots, potatoes, diced onion, seasonings and ground beef by hand, then scoop the raw ingredients into a flour crust which is folded. They bake meat pies and fruit pies all day with lots of turnover (no pun intended) so they are always hot & fresh.

I learned that sports fans purchase pasties by the 50s and 100s for their Super Bowl parties and other functions.  A small pasty filled me up for around $2.50 while the large pasty for $5 is for big appetites. Ideal for parties they don't create much mess or stains on carpets.

When you visit Disneyland, this shop is a mere 8 away on the same road. There are other restaurants nearby but this is a great comfort food at a budget price. I highly recommend the beef pie.
