Dachshund Races in California

Swift, short-legged Dachshunds race to the finish line  this summer 2012 in the annual events that delight audience and pet owners who come to win, whine, and have a great time.

The best known race is Wiener Dog Nationals. A race is held in Los Alamitos in July, and  in San Diego in August. Here are the races and dates we've found!

All dogs must meet the weight and height requirement (less than 28 lbs AND 15" at the shoulder). Dog may be weighed and measured at the discretion of the Racing Officials. The Racing Officials will disqualify any dog that does not meet these requirements. The dogs can be pure-bred or mixed. Every effort will be made to run dogs of similar breeds and weights in the same heats.

Proceeds to benefit the Seal Beach Animal Care Center. The Care Center is a non-profit group dedicated to finding home for stray animals in the Orange County area.

The first Wienerschnitzel Wiener National race is set for 6 p.m. with the live horse-racing program to be held in conjunction with the dachshund races. The Wiener Nationals Championship race will be held at approximately 9 p.m.

General parking is free. Los Alamitos Race Course is located at 4961 Katella Avenue in Los Alamitos. For more info call, 714-820-2690.

Tickets can be purchased on the day of the event on a first come first seat basis. We suggest fans arrive early on the day of the event. For safety reasons, only dachshunds participating in the Wiener Nationals are allowed to come in to the racetrack. NO OTHER DOGS WILL BE ALLOWED.

SAN DIEGO - Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals  August 3, 2013  - 2014 TBA

Qualcomm Stadium Rugby Fields (Near Section J-5 in the Stadium Parking Lot).  8:00am - Registration/Check-in; 9:00am - First Races

The 17th annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals kicks off in San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium. The top sixteen dogs from the qualifying round will advance to the San Diego final in on Labor Day at the Del Mar Race Track. The top dog from San Diego will advance to the championship at the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade presented by the San Diego County Credit Union.

This year's finalists will receive the opportunity to march with the Wienerschnitzel float in the nationally televised parade.

Any dachshund may participate!  Admission to the event is free to humans and non-racing dogs. T-Shirt size not guaranteed. This is a rain or shine event. There will be no refunds for this event.

The Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals accept vendors with animal related causes and products. In order to view the races, all dogs and their owners must walk through vendor village. This year’s event is expected to draw more than 350 dachshunds and their owners from all around Southern California. Races are free for dog rescue organizations.
