Outplay-The Band

A Hit in the Making

There's a new band in town that's  packing them in and rocking California like a bucking bull.

Anyone who hears "Outplay--The Band" will be clapping their hands, stomping their feet, singing along and dancing in the aisles. Made up of some of the finest, veteran entertainers around, the SoCal-based crowd-pleasers feature well-known singer/musician/songwriter Shannan Rene Parks, whose passionate, soulful, powerful voice has been heard by Willie Nelson, Waylan Jennings, Pilar Wayne and grateful audiences on television and everywhere else.

The San Francisco-native, who grew up all over since her dad was a Marine, builds instant rapport and respect with the crowd by putting everything she has into a song--energetically swaying, kicking, grooving, dancing, flirting, showing her unique style, busting out the words with feeling, meaning and the innermost soul.

Her fellow band members play off each other and show their own brilliance--from Jeff Jorgenson (sax, clarinet, flute), who has performed alongside Helen Reddy, Gladys Knight, The Four Tops and others to Billy Lymperis (lead guitar and vocals), who played with Aretha Franklin, Christopher Cross and Eddie Money (his father played trumpet with Stan Kenton) to Mark Anderson (drums and vocals), who performed with The Temptations and is the son of a drummer, to Matt "The Hat" Boyd, who once entertained with The Temptations and Mills Brothers, and has developed a mellow voice all his own.

"We love rhythm and blues, funk, pop, jazz and more," Boyd said. "We like music we all know and blend it together. Each person adds his own style to create a special sound."

Outplay (a verb meaning "play better than") also creates their own songs, such as "The Right to Be Me," "Take a Chance," "Pure as Gold" and "Believe," which will be on their new CD that will be recorded soon.

The personable and multi-talented Parks, who also plays guitar, tambourine and conga drum, strolls or jumps out into the crowd and enthusiastically encourages them to dance and have the time of their lives.

Recently, at the American Legion in Newport Beach, Outplay's fantastic sounds rolled across the bay and were even enjoyed by appreciative yachtsmen passing by. If we could bottle Outplay's energy, we might not be in an energy crisis and there would be plenty to pass around. Definitely see them, if you get the chance. Check their website to find out where they will erupt next, outplaytheband.com or visit them on facebook.com/outplay-theband. They also play weddings and private parties.
