Among the popular activities that have traditionally been a part of Avenal's Pistachio Festival is the Nut Toss, Trackless Train Rides for kids, and more.

Pistachio Capital of the World  - Avenal is home to the largest pistachio grower and processor, Wonderful Pistachios, which employs a majority of Avenal's agricultural labor force seasonally and full-time. To celebrate the prominent role that pistachios play in the daily life of Avenal residents, the Avenal Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Avenal, established the annual Pistachio Festival, a four-day pistachio-themed fall event that brings the community together with a wide-range of family activities and attractions.

The bountiful pistachio crop that grows in and around Avenal was first made possible with the opening of the California Aqueduct in the 1970s. It brought needed water to the west side while the opening of Interstate 5 provided infrastructure needed to transport crops.
