"Nothin' shakin' on Shakedown Street. Used to be the heart of town.
Don't tell me this town ain't got no heart. You just gotta poke around."

What's this festival about? The main motivation for this festival is to help preserve and promote the music and community of the Grateful Dead. Also to help bring it to the younger generation. I was raised by two hippies in Berkeley (and other areas in the Bay) who had connections to the Bay Area local music scene. As a teen, I went to as many Dead shows as I could...even took a very memorable trip, with my now business partner, to a show in Las Vegas. We wanted to recreate the feeling of the parking lot of a show, or the 'Shakedown'. The 'Shakedown' at a Dead show (and every show had one in some form' was where one would go before the show to hang out and reconnect with 'family' members. People would set up little 'shops' and sell their wares or some food they would be making. These same people would tour with the band and do this at every show. It is an amazing sup-culture. The Dead are THE Bay Area home town band from the 1960's. One of the only ones that are still around and still have an ever growing fan base. After they left SF, they made Berkeley their home base. There is a large Dead following in Berkeley, more so then in most other cities of its size. Local Dead Head most definitely see them as icons...especially Jerry, now that he has passed. Some have almost deified him, in a way...the cult of Jerry! Lol Anyway, we are just some Dead Head who loves the music, the community, and the people and wanted to create an event that will make people smile...and help cure worldwide blindness. Can't forget to mention that! :)
