California is home to many superlatives when it comes to trees. The state has the tallest trees in the world, the biggest trees in the world (per circumference and weight), and the oldest in the world. Trees are important to the state. There are more than 160 Tree City USA members in California comprised of municipalities and towns.

Arbor Day occurs on different dates according to their best tree-planting times nationally. A California State resolution proclaimed March 7-14 as California Arbor Week to coincide with the birthday of horticulturalist Luther Burbank (March 7, 1849-April 11, 1926).
