 Sure, California's got luxury yachts, exotic racing boats and sailboat. But great beginnings start with kids learning. Opportunities to builds things to float and enter them in a race abound in California. Here are but a few of these unique boat derbies and races for you to check out!

APPLE VALLEY: Cardboard Boat Regatta July 20, 2019, 4:30 -7:30 p.m. Location: Aquatic Center.  Divisions: 10-17 & 18 and over, Fee: $15 per team/$1 spectator admission applevalley.org

LAKEPORT: 4th of July Duct Tape Regatta July 4, 2019, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

PLEASANTON: Box Boat Derby Night Friday, July 19, 2019, 6-9 p.m.

Make a cardboard and duct tape boat to race in our shallow pool! Make the boat at home or make one here! Boats and any paddles you would like to use must be made 100% out of cardboard and duct tape. Race begins at 7:30pm, and you must check your boat and captain in by 7 p.m. Pools will also be open for recreational swim. Regular recreational swim fees apply.

TEMECULA: Temecula Boat Regatta Friday, August 16, 2019, 6:30-9 p.m. Teams build a 2-man vessel made out of only cardboard and duct tape, then  two team members ride it in the CRC pool. If your group chooses to build more than one boat, please register accordingly. $10/boat, temecualca.gov

ANTIOCH: Box Boat Derby July 12, 2019, 4:30 p.m. Race at  5 p.m. Antioch Water Park 
Make a cardboard and duct tape boat to race across the shallow area of the lap pool. Make your boat at home or create your boat during your day at the park (limited supplies available).  Check your boat in by 4:30pm.   Race begins at 5pm!  Prizes for fastest racers and best in show! GASQUET: Gasquet Raft Races Start: July 13, 2019
American Legion Hall, 1555 Gasquet Flat Road, Gasquet, CA 95543 The American Legion 48th annual raft races offer a fun time. Participants in costume enter their decorated rafts. Check in at American Legion Hall; you will be directed from there. Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the forks; the raft races start at 12 noon. A deep pit BBQ at the American Legion Hall is available after the race. BBQ is $10. Register online at gasquetraftrace.com,

THREE RIVERS: Bathtub Race March
threerivers.com Picnic with Bathtub Race at Lake Kaweah. Pre-registered Teams build floatable steerable boats from cast iron bathtubs and the raw materials supplied, then race across Lake Kaweah and back, for charity! This event is free for attendees. It is held on the last Saturday March. Parking: the Army Corps at Lake Kaweah has a day use fee of approx. $4 per passenger vehicle.
