Whitewater Wednesday, annual tradition. Wet your Pants on the Kern! Kernville Chamber of Commerce, along with 5 commercial rafting companies operating on the Kern River, sponsor trip options: Lickety Split trip is an inexpensive introduction to whitewater rafting, |  Sequoia Splash Run with Lunch included with all trips.   Minimum age is 7 years for the Lickety Split, life jackets are provided.

  • There is no charge to view any of the events and everyone is invited to be a part of this long-running whitewater tradition.
  • Spectators can enjoy sponsor and vendor booths in Riverside Park throughout the event featuring the latest boats, paddling and outdoor gear.
  • Children's Sidewalk Art Contest is free for under age 18 years on  Saturday afternoon, free chalk provided. Location: Riverside Park. chalk art
  • Festival Dinner & Silent Auction, with a wonderful dinner provided by Sierra Gateway Market, and live music Saturday 5:30-7:30 p.m. is ticketed event in Riverside Park.

The WhiteWater Capital of California celebrates spring with an annual boating event, the Kern River WhiteWater Festival. Whimsical races, plus the more serious Olympic qualifying races with more excitement than you can imagine provide a great reason to head for the Sierras for this event.

Extreme Slalom & Downriver Races complete with waterfalls, slides, a great granite amphitheater for spectator viewing. It is awesome! This exciting event is a parade of self-made boats that will travel downriver and attempt to make it to the end of the Park. The "Race" is to see which boats that can make it to the finish before falling apart!

The Rules:
Only make-shift boats, using non-boat materials
All participants must wear Type III-Whitewater PFDs. Helmets Recommended
Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult on the river.
Must check in when you get out of the water

Get a group together, sign up, and start building a boat. Can be for a single person or a group of people. You will have to navigate the boat from the bottom of Ewings Rapid (not through the rapid) to the bottom of Riverside Park.

A combination of a run from Riverside Park to the Power House put-in, and then a downriver class II-III paddle back to the park. Classes for single persons (doing both), two people (one running, one paddling). Boat categories include plastic, race, IK, and standup board.

T.J. Citizen Slalom Race Junior Olympic Qualifier
This Olympic event, a slalom kayaking timed race in which a paddler must negotiate a series of gates, without touching them, and some of those gates must be run while paddling upstream. The T.J. is run through a class II section at Riverside Park and is open to boaters of all levels and types of whitewater boats, with classes for Expert, Intermediate, Novice, Junior and Cadets. The Kern Festival T.J. Slalom is the first event of the Sierra Cup Slalom Series.
Standup Boarder-Cross

The traditional TJ Slalom race and new this year -- a downriver Biathalon race. Back again this year is a new addition to the events, a Standup Boarder-Cross will be held in Riverside Park in downtown Kernville on Sunday; there is sure to be plenty to keep you entertained as you hang out on the banks of the mighty Kern. All events have easy access for boaters and spectators.

Entertainment

KRBC Beer Garden, BBQ dinner Saturday. The Festival Silent Auction will be on Saturday, and Raffle on Sunday.

Everyone is invited to come to the Festival and be a part of this long-running whitewater tradition! There is no charge to view any of the events. Sponsor and vendor booths will be setup in Riverside Park throughout the event. Come check out all the latest boats, paddling and outdoor gear!
