The first annual Himalayan Festival brought cultural awareness--exciting music, folk dancing, traditional costumes, delicious food, handmade rugs, jewelry, literature, clothing, photographs and more--to the joyful people on the Festival of Arts Grounds in Laguna Beach yesterday.
The fun event, which is subtitled, "Four Countries in Two Days," concludes today (10-5) at 650 Laguna Canyon Road. $5 entry fee; seniors and children are free.
Vickie Lamb really enjoyed seeing folks from Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and India. Having visited Nepal, Lamb said the people are so incredible. "They are so compassionate, so friendly, so helpful to everyone." Her husband, Tom, a professional photographer, who has captured their expressions, agrees.
Their daughter, Morgan, who loves Himalayan food, said the festival really helps make different cultures aware of one another, producing a better appreciation for and understanding of each other.
"It's important for people to care about their own culture and to understand others," said Passang Nima Sherpa, from Eastern Nepal, who has helped mountain-climbing expeditions in Nepal and North America. "We learn from the intelligent people we are helping climb and they learn from us. Working with people from different countries gives you a better understanding of the world."
Tsering Dhondup, one of the festival creators, said it's wonderful to bring different cultures together and share ideas. "It helps build an inter-cultural link and social harmony in multi-cultural Southern California," he said. 'It strengthens cultural ties, not only between the different Himalayan communities but with Southern California."
The happy program, supported by The Neighborhood Congregational Church of Laguna Beach, features a variety of vendors offering amazing pieces of Himalayan culture for the eyes, ears, mouth and nose.
