The City of Los Angeles promotes its history through
festive celebrations
that take place during the year.
Celebrate L.A.'s birthday this weekend on August 26, 2017 with several
special events. The first event is a Walk & Bike from Mission San
Gabriel (428 S. Mission Drive) to El Pueblo (424 N. Main St.)
The
journey is a whopping 9 miles and will take some time to accomplish,
culminating in special presentations and birthday day cake at the Pico
House and El Pueblo beginning around 10:30 a.m. Los Angeles Birthday
Celebration which commemorates the anniversary of the 1781 founding of
Los Angeles with Los Pobladores historic re-enactments, artisan
demonstrations, exhibits, food, entertainment and plenty of birthday
cake goes from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Later in the day the Los Angeles Archdiocese will celebrate Los Angeles'
236th birthday with a procession and festivities in honor of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, Queen of Angels, for whom the city is named: El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles”. The public is invited to join the
festivities on Saturday starting with a Votive Mass at 3 p.m., at the
Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, celebrated by Archbishop Gomez;
followed by the Grand Marian Procession at 4:30 p.m. to the Our Lady
Queen of Angels Church La Placita in Olvera Street for a joyful blessing
at 5:15 p.m. and Fiesta in La Plaza de Cultural Artes at 5:45 p.m.
