Always held the first weekend in May, this community event is anticipated annually and is a great introduction for visitors seeking to connect with small town Americana. The gateway to Yosemite National Park is Mariposa, a city with much to explore.

The Mariposa Butterfly Festival is a family-friendly event that begins with a parade through the historic downtown community of Mariposa which is Spanish for Butterfly. The festival celebrates the history of this gold rush town and its name. The festival includes local entertainment, a mariachi band, a beer garden, a car show, and butterflies of course!

Children are wowed in Habit Row as they learn about butterflies and their importance to our environment as pollinators.

Visit Jurassic Mariposa where animatronic beasts will thrill and soar on the back of a butterfly through the magic of technology.

Butterflies are released to visitors of the festival throughout the event. Come for the festival and stay to visit Yosemite National Park.

The Butterfly Festival often includes an Art Show, Parade, Contests and lots of kids wearing butterfly wing-costumes. There's a butterfly release, but it can only take place if it is not raining and only when temperature is 60 or above.
It is really great fun. Go if you can.

Events are not guaranteed. It is your responsibility to confirm before going.
