In the most appropriate location, whimsical vehicles decked out like the Leaning Tower of Pisa or a cannoli race down the streets of Little Italy in the annual VanGo! STEAM Festival signature event. The free admission, family-friendly festival produced by Washington Elementary S.T.E.A.M. Magnet School includes live musical and visual arts performances; interactive activities, a fine art exhibit; local vendors; food; and a beer and wine garden. Anything Goes soapbox derby race for adults was introduced in 2016.

Named in honor of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) initiative, silly soap box cars built by students and sponsored by local businesses combine both technology and art. The non-motorized vehicles are designed using science principles that make Washington Elementary Principle Crum proud. The inaugural launch of this fun event in 2015 was an instant hit and a win-win. All profits made at the VanGo! S.T.E.A.M. Festival benefit the Washington Elementary S.T.E.A.M. Magnet School.

"It's great to have a school in the neighborhood that works with the community and holds events for the kids, residents and visitors to enjoy," said Chris Gomez, Little Italy Association's district manager.

Other fun races include:

Nevada City Soapbox Derby

Humboldt County's Kinetic Sculpture Race
