The Trinity County Historical Society's Jake Jackson Blacksmith Shop invites blacksmiths from around the nation to spend three days in the hills of Weaverville working on a fantastic project such as a wrought iron rail for the museum stair along side the smithy.

Before nails and tools were manufactured by precision equipment they were created by shaping very hot metal into desired items. During the Gold Rush it's estimated that 1 in 5, or 20% of the working population listed their career as blacksmith. Today 1 person in 646,000 is a professional blacksmith -- quite a difference!

Trinity County Historical Society carries the torch by promoting such trades. Students apprentice the craft of blacksmithing through the museum's program that keeps the fires burning.

Weaverville is a Trinity County town situated at 2,051 feet elevation at the edge of Trinity Alps Wilderness Area. Located along meandering CA 299 Highway between Redding and the California coastal college town, Arcata, the Pacific Ocean is approx, 85 miles as the crow flies, which means Weaverville tends to lose that ocean effect in the summer when temperatures climb to the high 90s, and mid-40s in the winter.

The historic California Gold Rush town was home to around 2,000 Chinese gold miners, and transitioned into logging for some time. California's oldest continuously used Chinese temple, the Joss House State Historic Park built in 1847.
