Yuba City celebrates the largest Sikh Festival outside of India.

45th annual Nagar Kirtan Program 2024

  • Fireworks - Friday November 1, 2024, 9 p.m. The  Guru Gadee inaugural event in Yuba City CA initially started off with worship service and kirtan.
  • Saturday November 2, 2024 Open House & Reception.  9 a.m. Raising of Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag followed by morning worship and kirtan, tour of gurdwara complex and grounds. 6 p.m.- midnight  Rain sabaee kirtan worship service.
  • Sunday November 3, 2024, 11 a.m.  Sikh Parade -  A float bearing Guru Granth Sahib (the central holy religious scripture of Sikhism, regarded by Sikhs as the final, sovereign and eternal Guru following the lineage of the ten human gurus of the religion,) is followed by a procession of dozens of decorative floats and devotees winding through the streets of Yuba City along a 4 1/2 mile loop. The parade marks the end of three days full of festivities.  Rain or shine, people of all faiths, from all around the world join the parade route as devotional hymns sail through the air. 

In 1979, the Yuba City Sikh Festival was just in its infancy, attracting a small, but energetic crowd of festival-goers.

This year on Sunday the annual Nagar Kirtan festival and parade expects to have over 100,000 people, swamping the streets of Yuba City with fun activities and celebrations.

For at least two months every year, the Sikh Temple Gurdwara in Yuba City prepares for what has been labeled as the largest Sikh event outside of India. The planning is large-scale - there are multiple activities, events, and ceremonies that occur throughout the entire weekend. The event is open to the public and is free.

Activities include:

  • Dozens of decorative floats
  • A gatka sword dancing demonstration
  • A bazaar with stopping stalls and sellers of hard to find Sikh clothing, articles of faith, books, and a variety of other items such as dry good, blankets and carpets
  • Sikh families in the community cook and often donate incredible amounts of  food to give to those who attend the event. Langar is offered in the gurdwara langar hall, and from free food booths both on the gurdwara grounds and all along the parade route.

Commemorating the Guru Gaddee inauguration this holiday of Sikhism's holy scripture, Siri Guru Granth Sahib. Every year, rain or shine, an increasing number of Sikh devotees and spectators flock to Yuba City, California for a weekend of festivities and the time honored tradition of Nagar Kirtan, a parade featuring devotional hymns.
