When you gaze from L.A. Arboretum to the San Gabriel mountains, it is a spectacle somewhat reminiscent of another nearby garden at Huntington Library & Gardens in San Marino. However, Los Angeles Arboretum is focused on one thing -- gardens! By comparison, the Los Angeles County Arboretum spans 127 acres, while Huntington Library Gardens are 120 acres in size.
The beauty of the LA County Arboretum is in its exhibits, its peafowl (peacocks) and entertainment in the gardens throughout the year such as the popular summertime dinner concerts. It also has tram tours which the Huntington Library & Gardens don't offer.
On rare occasion the Queen Anne Cottage (1885-86) opens its doors for public tours, and is an historic treat to see. For those who watch old TV sitcoms, look for it on the opening of Fantasy Island!
The arboretum's plants are grouped by
geography with gardens for
Asiatic-North American plants.
