If you had looked at a map representing the geographic area comprising
California before the Gold Rush (circa 1840s-60s), you would see a quilt work
map of Indian territories much larger that today. But to see the entire picture,
you would have to roll back the clock to the 1600s-1700s before the strong
presence of Spanish and Russian explorers who sought to claim the territories
for their homelands.
