San Luis Obispo Historical Museum is housed in one of California's Carnegie Library buildings in the downtown Mission Plaza area which offers a walkable visit. The exhibit space is not particularly large and expansive but the collections are definitely worth checking out, as the largest portion of artifacts are housed off-site and appear in rotating exhibits.

The Carnegie building includes a gallery, research room, and gift shop, plus nearby Dallidet Adobe and Gardens on 1185 Pacific Street in SLO.

The Carnegie Library building in San Luis Obispo was constructed / opened on February 12, 1903. Cost was $10,000. The Library operated under the History Center underwent necessary renovation for safety from 1998 to 2001. Today it offers a glimpse into the city's past, sitting on a hill and handsomely noticeable with its red brick and accenting stone design. Also attractive to the location is a mountain in the background.
